After spending most of the afternoon baking, the cake for celebrating my grandfather's 90th birthday is finished. It doesn't look quite as good as I'd like, but that was somewhat expected since I've never frosted a layer cake before, and homemade caramel frosting sets up much quicker than I had anticipated.

it's lovely!!!

Caramel frosting is always in order...

and a happy birthday to your grandfather. He was born the same year as my maternal grandma.

What matters is it's made from scratch and made from the heart. I'm sure it'll be delicous. Looks it to me. <=)

A much easier way of frosting in a uniform manner is to take a lazy susan (or other sort of platform-that-turns-evenly) grab a new plaster blade at home depot for $2.00, and while keeping the blade stationary, turn the lazy susan and frost the cake to an even surface. Works out quite well!

That would work. My mother reminded me of another thing that would have helped, had I remembered- keeping the metal spatula warm. All it would have taken was a measuring cup filled with warm water to dip the thing in periodically.
