Another Christmas has passed

The holiday went pretty well for me this year.
I visited my grandmother on Christmas eve, where we played scrabble and pinochle. We also learned that my grandmother sold a large picture of my mother to my middle cousin since he gave her the best offer- two bits.
I spent the night on a futon at my parents' place, and found it was a great reminder of why I don't like being around them for extended periods of time.
Christmas day had the usual opening presents and throwing the wadded up wrapping paper at my mother. I got some nice DVDs and a replacement for a blue dress shirt that tore. My mom did something kind of silly at one point when she tried to find where she put a poinsettia for my grandmother. For some reason she decided to look for it without putting on her glasses first, causing her to wander around squinting at things with a funny expression on her face. My sister and I were amused by that for the rest of the day.
Dinner was at my grandparents' house, along with more presents. We had the usual turkey, stuffing, cranberries, gelatin, rolls, mixed vegetables, mashed potatoes, and gravy. Dessert was apple pie, pumpkin pie, a crumble-topped cherry pie, and some kiefling.
The best part of the night was getting to see my aunt again. She's always great to talk to, and I'm out to her now. It was really tricky to get her away from other family members since everybody wants to talk to her. I was also wise to approach this slowly since I found out that my grandparents aren't even capable of grokking that my aunt's a Buddhist.
One thing did mar the evening, however. There were some complications after my grandmother's knee replacement and now she needs to have an artery replaced to fix some clotting problems. My aunt's staying an extra week to help out, probably can't afford it, and is going to make sure that my grandmother get some physical therapy to get her walking again. Part of my grandmother's trouble might have occurred because she hasn't done enough walking for a number of year, always preferring to have my grandfather bring the car around to her.
To make matters worse, my grandmother won't say she's in pain and expresses it by being critical and demanding. I also learned from my aunt that my grandmother's interest in the surgery ends at the the point where she'll have it. She doesn't care about where the clot is or what the complications might be, and she decided to go to bed early tonight, which she never does when there are guests.
"Although, it's been said many times, many ways, merry Christmas to you."

Date: 2006-12-26 02:27 pm (UTC)Man, that soulds like some dinner! Did it taste as good as it sounds?
Your aunt sounds cool! And she's a Budhist! I want to meet her :)
Sorry to hear there were compliations to your Gran's surgery :(
All the best, Brian. Happy St. Stephen's Day!

Date: 2006-12-26 02:58 pm (UTC)It always tastes great. Okay, I wouldn't know about the cherry pie since I've lost my taste for cherries, but the rest was good.
My aunt is cool, and it's a shame that I only get to see her at this time of year. You'd approve of her method of dealing with her parents driving her nuts- kicking back a few extra glasses of wine.
Thanks. I'm more concerned about her attitude toward the surgery than I am about the surgery itself. She sounds like she's giving up.
Thanks, you too.

Yeah, cherries are SO not all that. You know what? FUCK cherries, fuck them right in the ear!
That's a good way of dealing with anything ;) XD
Awwww, that sounds so sad. I hope things pick up for her soon

Date: 2006-12-26 04:38 pm (UTC)Sounds like a plan; although, you might like the chocolate covered cherries my mom sometimes makes. She makes two batches, one gets marinated in rum and put in dark chocolate while the other is marinated in amaretto and put in milk chocolate.
And she isn't normally a drinker.
Yeah, but I think she'll get through it. My aunt's going to make sure she gets physical therapy that makes her do more walking.

Date: 2006-12-26 04:49 pm (UTC)Your mom DOES sound rather funny doing that. ;-) And yes, throwing the crumpled wrapping paper at people is SO FUN. XD
I'm glad you had a good time, good food, and good conversation with your aunt. :-)
Oif, I hope your grandmother starts getting better soon, though. *hugs*
Take care, dude, and have a happy New Year and such. :-)

Date: 2006-12-26 05:00 pm (UTC)Conversations with my aunt are always good.
*hugsback* I think she'll be okay. Part of this is also shock since nobody bothered to tell me in advance. The quickest way to make me scared and confused is to keep me out of the loop.
Thanks, you too.

Date: 2006-12-26 08:41 pm (UTC)The knee thing just got to me a bit because nobody bothered to tell me about it.
Happy holidays to you too.
