A month or two ago, I got a rather large idea. I wanted to do something with scalable vector graphics (SVG) after seeing nice use of the format at work. I began reading about the format and realized that it was essentially Flash, except the format was text-based and defined by the W3C. After some more research, I realized that SVG's animation capabilities and the ability to combine the format with external style sheets and things like Javascript inspired me. Imagine an online fighting game where players could upload characters they created and then use them to play against other people.

If done right it could be really cool; however, I've never even considered starting a project of this scale before. A lot of work would have to go into just the planning, research, and experimentation stages. I need to become comfortable with drawing graphics in SVG, then learn how to make simple animation sequences, add the ability to control the animation with Javascript, build a prototype game engine, and do some of my own debugging.

That's effectively just the first step. After that, I'd have to get some webspace, start building the infrastructure, find some test subjects, then identify and remove potential problems in the design (bugfixes, rules to balance gameplay, etc.).

I'm still learning SVG and have only produced a single static image that I like, so it may be a long while before I even get to the point of needing webspace. It may even be necessary to build my own file format to simplify character creation and management.
